H — Heal What Still Hurts

Naming the wound is not the same as tending it. This is the slow, kind work of letting Jesus into the places you have learned to manage.

Time does not heal. Time only distances. Plenty of us are years away from what hurt us and still flinch at the same doorway.

Healing is what happens when the wound is brought into the presence of the Healer instead of the presence of a strategy. It is slower than coping and far more permanent.

Time Distances. It Does Not Heal.#

We say time heals all wounds because it is comforting and because it lets us off the hook.

But plenty of us are years past what hurt us and still brace at the same tone of voice, the same doorway, the same season on the calendar.

Distance is not healing. Healing is what happens when a wound is brought into the presence of the Healer.

Coping Is Not the Same as Healing#

Coping is a skill. It is how you stayed functional. It deserves gratitude, not shame.

But coping manages a wound; it does not close it. If you find yourself needing more and more management just to stay level, that is not a discipline problem. That is an unhealed place asking for attention.

The Places We Lost Ourselves#

Ask a harder question than "what hurt me?" Ask "where did I lose myself this year?"

Often the loss is quiet: the laugh that got smaller, the opinion you stopped voicing, the dream you stopped mentioning because it embarrassed you.

Healing includes recovery — going back for what you abandoned in order to keep the peace.

Healing Has a Pace#

You will be tempted to demand a timeline. God works in seasons, not deadlines.

Choose one wound, not ten. Bring it to Him weekly. Let Him tell you what He sees there.

Slow healing that holds is better than fast healing that has to be redone every January.

A prayer to close

Jesus, You are not only my Savior. You are my Healer. Come into the place I have been managing instead of mending. Bind up what is broken and give me the patience to let You finish. Amen.
